New York Times bestselling author, CHERYL HOLT, delights readers once again with the first sizzling story in her new “Reluctant Brides” trilogy…

Rose Ralston has spent her life at Miss Peabody’s School for Girls—first as a student, then as a teacher. But with Miss Peabody’s passing, the school has been closed, the students sent away, and Rose is facing an uncertain future. As Miss Peabody’s will is read, Rose had been told to expect a small bequest, but she’s stunned to discover that her inheritance is a dowry that’s already been paid to an elderly widower. The man is in quick need of an heir, and Rose can agree to wed or she’ll get nothing and will have no money and nowhere to go. She’s never lived on her own, and without family or friends to assist her, she’s out of options. Reluctantly, she agrees to the marriage and heads off to the man’s Summerfield estate.

James Talbot grew up at Summerfield. But as an orphan, his position was never exactly clear. The owner, Stanley Oswald, constantly tormented James with the secrets of his parentage. Rumors abound that he’s Stanley’s natural-born son, but the truth has been impossible to unravel. Needing to escape Stanley’s manipulations, James has spent the past decade in the army. But Stanley has lured him home, and when James learns of Stanley’s pending marriage, he can’t help but be intrigued. He’s eager to engage in a little mischief, and nothing would give him greater pleasure than to ruin the match before it begins.

Rose is fascinated by handsome, virile James, but bound to wed elderly, decrepit Stanley. As Stanley woos her and James interferes, any wild ending seems possible. For Rose—who only ever wanted a home of her own—she just might end up with more than she ever dreamed.

RELUCTANT BRIDES… When love is the key and dowry the bait, who can predict what a woman might do?

Miss Ralston was an orphan. Her mother, Lady Sidwell had run off to marry a parson and they went to Egypt to be missionaries. Her father disowned her since he did n' t feel she married well. They died of an illness when she was 4 years old and her grandfather refused to take her but sent her to Miss Peabody' s school. The new Earl, her grandfather's brother, continued to pay her tuition at the school. When she was an adult she taught at the school. Miss Peabody told the 3 teachers who had grown up there and then taught there, that she would leave them something in her will.

When she died, the solicitor told them that she provided a dowry and she had picked out grooms for them. They had nothing otherwise and the school was to be closed and sold. Miss Ralston was the first to go. She was going to be wife of an old man who needed an heir before he died. She went off and this is her story. Things were not quite as Miss Ralston thought. She wondered why Miss Peabody would have thought this would be good for her and if she liked her as much as she previously thought. This is an interesting story. I recommend reading to the conclusion. I enjoyed it. I wondered if Miss Peabody knew the parties well enough to understand how it would really turn out.

Wicked Reluctant Brides Trilogy Book 1 edition by Cheryl Holt Romance eBooks Reviews

Interesting enough to pass the time with for a light whimsical romance but lacks the excitement and breathlessness to make it memorable. Several grammatical errors noted but not enough to detract from the story. One plot error that made it irritating to me was the peephole in the chamber's secret door. James stated upon first meeting Rose that he had occupied that room for his entire time there yet Stanley was noted to have been watching women through this peephole for years. Quite disappointing for Cheryl Holt's usual level of expertise. Makes me wonder what is going on in her life that she was not up to her normal par this time.
I bought this book, thinking it would turn out better than the romance I had read which was entitled - "Forbidden," but it proved to be a total disappointment. Not only was the turn of events dull, but the flow of the story hampered my interest in the plot. Although the two stories are similar in description, yet the writing of this novel was too predictable and truly, it was not an enticing read at all for me.
The premise of this story, and the entire series, is very sweet. It revolves around three teachers whose matrimonial fates are sealed by the former headmistress at her death. All three women are innocent but feisty. The writing and dialogue is often humorous but it is redundant and seems as if the author had cut and pasted the same dialogue for all three books.

I read the entire series because I was hooked, but by the third book I could almost repeat verbatim what the heroines would be saying.

It is a simple and sweet read, but it could have been so much better. The heroines were each unique in their history and their perseverance. The men in their lives were each complicated and tortured souls, but kind. Unfortunately the bedroom scenes were much like the dialogue, redundant and lacking depth.
Ok, although this book had a storyline that I had not quiet seen before, it was pretty predictable. However it was still fun to see how this storyline played out. The characters were likable and not so broken that they were pathetic like can often happen in books. There was a lot of sexual tension. Definitely worth my .99 and my time. Could not put it down.
Rose Ralston was placed in Miss Peabody's school when she was a small child. She remained and even taught when she graduated. Miss Peabody had promised Rose she would be left some money when she died. Rose was shocked to learn she was to marry a seventy year old widower. He was getting her and the money in the form of a dowry. James Talbot had lived at Summerfield all his life he left for awhile to go into the army. He had no idea who was parents was maybe Stanley could be his kin.James agrees to help Stanley in the wooing of Rose. James begins to be attracted to Rose. Rose is not attracted of course to Stanley will she have a chance with James. James has to decide does he want Rose for himself or have her marry Stanley. This is the first book in the series two more will follow.
James Talbot is a rake who agrees to help Stanley Oswald in his pursuit of an heir with Rose. But of course everything goes wrong….or perhaps it goes right. Cheryl Holt has written a compelling read that is full of sexual tension, desperate intrigues, a jealous rival, a surprise and romance. Rose is a naïve young woman and her innocence is portrayed realistically for the era. I liked this book and I look forward to reading other books in this trilogy.
Cheryl Holt is back in fine form with her latest novel Wicked. This regency romance has a good cast of characters and a nice plot too.

Rose Ralston is a spinster who has taught at a girl’s academy for years. When the proprietor, Mrs. Peabody, passes away, Rose’s world shifts completely. Instead of teaching, Rose has been given a small dowry and an arranged match has been set up by her mentor Mrs. Peabody. Rose is to marry Stanly Oswald, and older gentleman and she is to proceed to his home immediately.

When Rose arrives at Oswald’s home she meets James Talbot, a man who has been a ward of Oswald. Rose finds James very attractive but she is there to marry Oswald even if he is 70 years old. Oswald is direct, and a little unfeeling. He is desperate for Rose to bear a child as he has no desire for his brother to inherit when he dies.

James is a bit of a rogue and he is charmed by Rose who is open and sweetly engaging. He is a bit thunderstruck at his feelings for her. Rose is at first wary but the more time she spends around James the more she grows to like and love him. Rose is unafraid to express her feelings, this is one of her best traits. She expresses herself well. James is not as introspective but he still is emotional and he has just a touch of the bad boy to make him interesting. This is a nice beginning to the Peabody school for Girls series.
