3.5 stars -- I received a free copy through NetGalley in exchange for an honest and unbiased review/opinion.

I love a good nerdy boy, and Paul totally fits the bill. I get that he's all hot now, but he has a nerdy soul, and that worked for me. Kelly was a bit harder to love. I normally shy away from popular girls, but I kind of liked how we saw how she struggled with the image she was supposed to maintain, and missed out on so much being someone she wasn't inside. It was an interesting perspective actually. So I warmed up to her more than I normally would, but still not entirely. I wanted a bit more flashback of what she loved about Paul back in the day so that I could feel better about her coming and pursuing him, rather than just because he was a nice guy.

Paul had his hiccups too...I mean, again, wish we had more flashbacks so we could see what parts he loved about Kelly, especially for so long...what attracted them to each other. What parts of their personalities meshed, kwim? But he was still pretty sweet, and I loved the relationship he had with his dog Sadie....she was a total winner for me.

I was a bit confused about the sex scenes. I mean, she has this suitcase full of seduction that included a riding crop and handcuffs, but when we finally got to the sex scene, it kind of faded to black...only it didn't really fade to black, but like the author just sort of skimmed over it. Which is ok, but I don't understand why. She still used explicit language occasionally, but it was like a recap instead of details. It just seemed odd to me. If I wanted a sweet fade to black read, this wouldn't have fit that either, you know? So either go sweet or go all in...it was kind of like a steamy tease, and so I was left disappointed. The closet scene was pretty hot though.

The part that will probably have me rounding up instead of down is that it totally knocked the heartwarming Christmas feel out of the park. Some of those moments when Paul was Santa and talking to the kids or parents of the kids -- particularly one Mom of a special needs boy -- really got me in the ticker. It's exactly what I look for in a Christmas read, so it got me into the magical spirit. So thanks Ms. Cutler!
I found this novella to be sweet with a middlin’ heat level … although, I gotta say that when you show up with a Nice suitcase and a Naughty suitcase that I’d expect that we’d at least get a little play with the things in toy chest? ) I know that it falls in the whole Santa and Christmas thing but I was kinda hoping for at least a little more steam out of all the goodies she brought.

But overall that was my only complaint – the characters are enjoyable, the story complete, and the ending works without feeling rushed. The length of the book is helped by the fact that these two were friends (of a sort) years ago and even though they have changed over time the closeness they had helps give them a good foundation to work with.

I know that a lot of reviewers are complaining about the lie that Kelly tells, which is more of an omission because she’s embarrassed and doesn’t want him to know how she’s screwed up. Which is totally understandable. Here she is with a guy that had a crush on her when she was one of the most popular girls in school but he was a nerdy outsider and now he’s the one who is all hot with his life together while she’s feeling kicked around. Why would you want to admit to that? Especially with the embarrassment factor thrown in. I’d find it hard to own up to as well.

Now, granted, he’s amazingly understanding and forgiving once everything does come out. He’s not perfect but he’s still the sweet, nice guy he was all those years ago. (Just now in an amazingly sexy package.) You can totally understand why she wants a chance with him, and I appreciate that she wanted that chance before she found out what a hottie he’d become. Makes her at least a little less shallow than she used to be )

She’s not perfect, but Kelly is real. And while there may be a little of him finally getting his dream girl in Paul’s reaction to her showing up, I’d like to think he’s the better man he seems to be and he truly does understand the real her and that’s the girl he’s falling for.

Paul Savage loves his job playing Santa at the Briscoe Ranch Resort where he's normally a back country guide. What Paul never expected though while he was entertaining the children and handing out candy canes was for Kelly Walker to walk back into his life at that moment and what an entrance it was when her suitcase full of naughty toys is spilled right there in front of everyone.

Kelly's life has become a complete mess so when she came across the job as holiday photographer with the perk of being near Paul she can't resist. Kelly had always wondered what if things had been different back then but she finds herself a bit flustered from this sexy cowboy who had certainly changed from that scrawny boy she remembers.

If Santa Were a Cowboy would have been a completely fun and wonderful read if for one small little detail that I just couldn't overlook. Kelly spent the entire story hiding the truth about herself from Paul out of embarrassment so really what kind of start to a relationship is that?

If overlooking the lies in the story this is a rather cute read about going back to a lost chance at love. There are funny moments all throughout and some cute flashing back to the past and trying to change what had happened. I'm not sure why the MC felt the need to lie but if that had been written out I'd definitely would have been completely recommending this book.

Overall, wasn't happy with the entire story but still an OK holiday romance.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.
